Hollow Body Electric Guitars Make Sweet Music

Hollow body electric guitar is also called semi acoustic guitar. It consists of more than one electric pickups and a sound box. It is not similar to any other electric guitar, which has other amplification added by player or the manufacturer. This instrument is primarily designed with amplifier. The sound box is specifically used to produce amplified sound which is not possible by any other solid instruments. The other acoustic and semi-acoustic electric instruments are mandolins and bases. The construction of these guitars is similar to other semi-acoustic electric guitars and has the same limitations as semi-acoustic guitars and are used in the same way as acoustic guitars.

Some guitars are border line between solid body and hollow body electric guitars. Telecaster guitars fall under this category. Some of the guitars have complete hollow body, while others may have solid centre. Hollow body guitars produce richer tone when compared to solid body. An amplifier can be connected to semi-acoustic guitars for a louder sound. This sound cannot be produced by an ordinary guitar. Hollow body electric guitars are considered as ever green and are the favorite guitars for jazz players and band troops.

Gibson, Rickenbacker and Gretsch are one of the top most manufacturers of these types of guitars. In the recent years several manufacturers are producing different new models of these guitars but they cannot beat the top brands listed. No matters how many new guitar models enter into the market the reputation of the top manufacturers of hollow body electric guitars stands on their own merit and is demonstrated by high consumer demand.

When comparing solid body guitars with others, they are heavier in weight than semi-acoustic guitars. In hollow guitars additional chambers are utilized to produce loud sounds and the size of the body is also reduced. There is, however, a negative point about these guitars and that is that they face problems in conditions of high gain amplification. In this situation the sound chambers produces undesireable feedback.

Semi-acoustic guitars consist of pickups which are similar to electric guitars. They have an empty body that helps in producing unique sounds. Electric acoustic, semi acoustic and hollow body are interchangeable terms used for electric guitars. Acoustic guitars consists of pickups where as electric guitars consists of sound chamber. Acoustic electrics and electric acoustics are considered as electric guitars designed with piezoelectric transducers, electromagnetic pickups or condenser microphones. Electric acoustic guitars will not fall under either category of semi-acoustic or hollow body electric guitars. They are entirely unique from these two guitars. Semi-acoustic guitars consist of solid block within.

The most important thing to bear in mind when looking for a hollow body electric guitar is to stick with the most popular manufacturers who have stood the test of time. After all, they've been around awhile for a reason!

What are the Basics of Buying Electric Guitars?

Just about every kid ever born wants to be a rock star. They see their favorite stars up there on stage playing the electric guitar to a crowd and want to do the same. Problem is, it's not easy learning to play the electric guitar.

And of course before you learn to play the guitar you need to own a guitar, or at least borrow one. When you're just starting out learning the electric guitar you don't need one like Jimmy Hendrix would play, but you still need to get your hands on an electric guitar that will be adequate for the beginner. And if that's you then there's a few things that you need to know about electric guitars that may help in understanding a little more about them.

First thing to remember about buying your first electric guitar is that you don't need to spend hundreds of thousands to do so. Be happy with a cheap electric guitar while you're learning, and maybe once you hit the big time spend up big. However a cheap electric guitar will do the job for the first few years.

You also need to know exactly what style of music you will be playing on your guitar. Different styles of music require different styles of electric guitar. You need a different guitar to play rock, for example, to the guitar you'd buy if you were playing jazz.

So spend a little time researching the types of electric guitar that should be used by different music styles.

Electric guitar types boil down to 2 basic types, solid body and hollow body. As the name suggests a solid body guitar has no hollow space inside, and is usually, though not exclusively, made of solid wood. Different types of timber can produce different sounds, so as you get better you may want to research more on the type of timber you need to produce the sound you want, but in the early stages if you're buying a cheap electric guitar don't get too carried away getting the ideal timber, you may find it more expensive than you need to be paying, and it's not essential at the start.

And there's a few unusual terms you'll need to become familiar with if you're buying an electric guitar for the first time. Here's a taste.

Pickups. The pickup is a magnet with a coil of wire wrapped around it placed right under the strings. This receives the vibrations of the strings and turns these into an electric signal for the amp to use. There are 2 types of pickup. The single coil, which produces a sound that sounds good for playing rock, blues and country. Humbuckers are a pickup with 2 coils next to each other that produces a warmer sound which is great for metal and rock in particular. Some guitars have a combination of single coils and humbuckers, and there is usually at least 2 pickups utilized.

Bridge. The bridge is where the strings connect to the body of the guitar. You can have a fixed bridge or a Vibrato bridge which allows you to move the bridge to tighten or loosen the strings. The fixed bridge is better for beginners who can graduate to a Vibrato bridge after they've mastered the basics.

Hollow body electric guitars are the second basic style of guitar. These, as the name suggests, have a hollow body although there is also a variation of this which is the semi hollow. As the player plays his guitar the hollow space helps the body resonate which produces a quite distinctive sound. These are good guitars for jazz. These hollow body guitars also utilize pickups, including single coil and humbucker.

That's really just the start when it comes to understanding electric guitars, and for the enthusiast it's a lifetime job learning all there is to know about them. And finding out exactly what it is that you need to play to produce exactly the sound you want to produce. That's part of the fun of playing the guitar, it's a constant learning process, not just about how to play but what to play as well.

However remember, the most important piece of advice. If you're a beginner don't spend up big the first time. Buy yourself a cheap electric guitar first, then learn to play that and take it from there. It's the best way to kick off your rock star career.

Rockabilly Guitar

Question about Gretsch guitar?

Hey guys, i was wondering if u can get a crunchy overdrive effect with a gretsch guitar? Something that sounds like ACDC or anything hardcore like that. I have a good fender amp with a nice overdrive setting. i was jjust wondering because i know these guitars are used for classic rockabilly type music with a cleaner sound and i wanted to know if i bought one if i would be limited to just that. thanks guys peace

That all depends on the specific gear, and the model. Tim Armstrong from Rancid played a Gretsch for years and years, so you can get a good dirty sound, it just depends on the model. Most hollow body guitars are made to give the robust rockabilly sounds, but there are different models for different things. If you're really going to spend that kind of money on a Gretsch then go with this one. http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Gretsch-Guitars-Professional-Collection-G6128T-Power-Jets-Electric-Guitar?sku=512163
Then get yourself a good blues pedal or an overdrive pedal, because you'll never get a quality overdrive sound from a regular amp, unless you've got an antique tube amp. Check out that model, though, it'll do you good.

One of the most popular musical instruments used in various popular music genres, acoustic guitars date back over 5000 years ago. Acoustics come in many different styles. Depending upon the music genre you would like to play, each will boast impressive playing features, as well as different resonating sounds.

There is no mistaking the distinctive look of an acoustic guitar-with its single sound hole, as well as the six strings that most of them have. There are actually various classes in the world, the most popular of which would be the steel string and the classical types.

Unlike electric guitars, acoustic guitars have their own means of amplification, in the form of its hollow body. The hollow body and single sound hole allows for the resonance of the sounds produced by the strings. Smaller bodies produce lower tones, while larger bodies are capable of producing heavier/deeper tones. Some are designed with cutaways, which basically impact the overall general sound.

Steel stringed acoustic guitars are, obviously, fitted with steel strings. They often come in various shapes, made from various materials, the most popular of these materials would be wood. They also have narrow necks, and produce a distinct sound.

Now, classical acoustic guitars differ from ones with steel strings in a couple of ways. Classicals have wider necks, and instead of steel strings, they use nylon strings. These nylon strings produce softer sounds compared to ones with steel strings, making them perfect for playing classical pieces.

Rock, Country, Alternative and Pop generally use steel stringed acoustics. Folk, Ragtime and country blues generally use classicals, as the finger picking nature of these genres are perfect for them.

A weak sustain is also one of the many things that stand out about acoustic guitars. A weak sustain means notes would easily face after being struck. Electric guitars, coupled with special effects, have higher sustain values over acoustics, but this doesn't mean all acoustics have this limitation. Certain acoustics, like concert guitars, feature good sustain, resulting to good overall performance.

If you are looking to learn how to play guitar, getting an acoustic guitar would be the best way to start, as they are the most basic of guitar type.

Stratocaster Electric

semi hollow VS telecaster/stratocaster electric guitars?

Hi I've been playing for little over a year now with my ibenez acoustic and my fender strat. I am currently using a fender g dec 30 amp but im getting a marshall 100 watt or a line 6 spider. So im looking to buy a new guitar such as a fender telecaster or some sort of semi hollow body( NOT a epiphone or ibenez).
I know that im interested in playing music more in the genre of indie rock/ alternative/ Psychedelic Rock/ New Wave/ Pop.

HELP
price range hoping under 800, because im only 16 and i have to pay for 100% of it icon sad Stratocaster Electric
oh but i was thinking of getting a telecaster or the semi hollow guitar.
yea fenders are great. I had mine on my friends bunk bed and he took the sheets off because he forgot it was there and it fell(neck first) a good 7 feet onto a metal footlocker. but it only had some scratches and plays great.

At your price range, I think the best thing you can but that's not an Epiphone or an Ibanez is a Telecaster Thinline semi-hollow. They are great too and are less than $800. They are MIMS, i think... but awesome. However, in terms of value for your dollar, the MIM solid body Telecasters are the best thing out there. You can ghet a great one for a good deal less than $800.

How about this for a dark horse? Yamaha has some GREAT high-line models. Look on their website and click on archtops. Also, look at their SBG series... those guitars are sooo versatile. Dont be fooled by their lower line stuff. Yamaha's higher line guitars are better than Fenders, Epi's or Ibanez'. If you sniff around, you can find one for under $800 maybe? I dunno. They are hard to find and you might have to contact Yamaha to find one.

Hmmm.. how about a used Gibson SG Special? They list for about $1000, but I bet you can grind someone in this economy.

Also, PRS makes a new semi-hollow thats pretty nice and more affordable than the rest of their line. I've seen them at SA and GC for about $700. They play real nice.

If you're open to full hollows, check out the Gretsch Hot Rod series.

As you begin to learn to play the guitar, you will be faced with choosing either an acoustic guitar or an electric guitar, depending on the situation you are playing in. There are subtle differences between them but the playing basics are the same. This article will detail the differences between Acoustic and electric guitars.

Acoustic guitars

These types of guitars do not require an amplifier or any electricity to be audible. The body is typically much thicker and is hollow. On the body under the strings is a "sound hole". When you play the guitar the sound is reverberated in the body of the guitar and is easily heard.

Acoustic guitars come in several sizes that include classical, jumbo, baby jumbo and concert. The size of the body will have an impact on the resonation of the sounds produced by the strings. Some will use strings made of nylon, some will use steel strings.

Acoustics also come in a couple of body shapes. The most common one is the dreadnought which has no "cut away" where the neck joins the body. A "cut away" is a sort of notch on one side of the neck where it joins the body. This allows more access to the higher frets. For an example, look at any picture of a Les Paul electric instrument. There are versions with single and double cut away designs.

Electric guitars

Electric guitars do not have a sound hole beneath the strings. Instead, there are pickups that detect the sounds from the strings and then send the signal through a patch cord to the amplifier when you play the guitar. The body is normally solid although there are hollow body designs available. There will always be a female plug-in on these guitars for the patch cord.

If you were to play one of these guitars without an amplifier, you would not be able to hear it. So you will NEED an amplifier to play electric guitar. The strings are always metal. The shapes of the body can be very basic or eclectic, like the Gibson Flying "V" or the newer BC Rich Beast. Any color is possible as well.

Depending on what you are playing, you will want to select the correct guitar. If you are playing slow ballads or folk music, an acoustic will be a good choice. For playing in a larger place or a rock genre piece of music, an electric guitar will be the better choice.

One thing about electric guitars is their ability to have their sound altered to achieve a rougher tone. This is done with "effects" like distortion, phase shift, chorus or one of many others sold in music stores.

Are you ready to play the guitar? As you can see, there are some differences between acoustic and electric guitars, but they are played the same way. If you can play one, you can definitely play the other.
