The guitar can seem like a very intimidating instrument.  It’s true that at first it’s difficult, especially since you’ll need finger strength and calluses to be able to play well, and those take time to develop.  But with a little time, patience, and dedication, you can easily learn how to play songs on guitar just by using online resources – and never need a real instructor at all.

Do you have a passion for blues and want to learn blues guitar?  Well you can.  There are courses available which focus on the guitar techniques for a particular genre of music for example, rock guitar lessons.  Other courses teach only whole songs.  The choice is available so pick a course which matches your reasons for wanting to learn how to play a guitar.

4.    Quality of Content.  As mentioned, make sure you pick a guitar course which is run by professionals and has a good reputation.  You can look on the Internet for reviews or ask in your local guitar/music shop for advice on which are the best.  Doing this will ensure the course you buy is not only made by experienced teachers and guitarists but is also well run and logically constructed.

5.    User friendly.  Following on from the last point, the course you buy must be user friendly and easy enough to use.  If it is over complicated and you can't learn from it, you will have lost some money and not learnt the guitar.

6.    Illustrations.  If you can, look through the instructional book.  The best ones are clear concise and easy to understand.  They should also have helpful images which can show you step-by-step what you need to learn.

7.    Cost.  So, you need to look for a course with all the above things which is in line with your budget.  As there are so many available, you are sure to find one which can help you learn how to play a guitar and doesn't leave a hole in your pocket.

It seems that rock guitar players have always been a crowd pleaser, even going back to the days of Les Paul. He may not qualify as a rock guitarist in the sense that we understand it today, but Les Paul certainly made people sit up and take notice whenever he played. Of course, Les was in at the very beginning of the solid body electric guitar's entry onto the stage, so at that time there were very few guitarists who were even interested enough to get the technique to become a great rock guitarist.

The foundation of the concept of the rock guitarist lay in the consolidation of the small group with drums, bass, lead and rhythm guitars, plus, maybe a keyboard. Groups like The Shadows, The Ventures and Dick Dale's Dell Tones made young men go out and buy guitars and sit in their rooms for hours practicing. When The Beatles became the first small group to gain international attention from people of all ages, the guitar reached the height of its popularity.

The era of the great rock guitarist began in the late sixties with Eric Clapton in Cream. Country music has been with us longer than most popular music genres. Country guitar players have evolved from guys in white cowboy suits strumming and singing about life on the trail to serious guitar virtuosos.

Lots of guitar players find themselves attracted to country music even though it may not be their original favorite style. A lot of guitarists find that country is a completely different way of playing guitar which gives their overall musicianship a big boost. So is country music difficult to learn after you have been playing rock for a while? Are there special chords or scales a country guitar player should know? And which country guitarists should I be listening to? Well, let's take a look.

First, let's deal with which country guitar players are regarded as the ones to listen to. There are many country artists who are not technical virtuosos, so if you have been watching Brad Paisley and Brent Mason, take comfort in the fact that you do not need to play up a storm. I'm not sure about genetics, but I've met a family of singers - where each member sings well. Some may be born with natural talent, but it does NOT mean the ones without it can't continue to work on their singing until they achieve the same level.

It's great that you're good at guitar. Continue to focus on your strength by all means. But what I'm trying to say is, you really CAN work on your singing. I don't know what instructional DVDs you bought, but it probably wasn't...Brett Manning's Singing Success.

My earliest fascination with music was watching the Musical Talent evenings and of course the Beatles and Elvis in their early days-all filmed only from the waist up!

I went to boarding school and it was there, watching the older boys playing guitar that I really become fascinated with the instrument. Of course, none of them wanted to teach or help a youngster to learn guitar and it was later, when I got my first guitar, than I secretly watched and tried to copy how they play a guitar, but without much success.

I kept breaking guitar strings and often ended up playing on only 3 or 5 strings instead of 6. It was eventually at a guitar shop that the salesman asked me why I was breaking so many guitar strings, and laughed at my complaint that there was something wrong with my guitar because it sounded horrible. He introduced me to a pitch-pipe.

Pitch pipe is a small device. It is not a musical instrument but a tool that produced a musical tone used for tuning or as reference pitch.

Using pitch pipe is a great way to get a tuning on a guitar, banjo or another stringed instrument.

How to use guitar pitch pipe? You blew into and it produced the six different pitched notes of the guitar six strings. Using pitch-pipe for guitar tuning, will help you to discover the true beauty and melody of the sound of the guitar.

I practiced my guitar almost every spare moment, but eventually realized that I had little or no musical understanding or even talent! So, I kept watching the older boys playing guitar. Eventually got one of them to show me how finger picking works, basic strumming etc.

You may find, that a concept and manner of learning how to play guitar will work the best for a beginner player using simple method such:

"Here is a finger, here is a a fret". And then "Here are two chords to learn. Now let us play a two chord song..." Try to stay away from boring the beginner player lessons on how to read music or tablature, but rather go straight on to playing your guitar. That all theoretical staff will come later as yours expertise and confidence grows.
