So besides this, why take on the bass guitar? What is it about the bass guitar that is cool, or should be attractive to someone just starting out that just wants to play SOMETHING? Well, getting up and running with a bass guitar is much easier than most other instruments. You don’t have to have four-way independence as with drums, you don’t have to memorize all the chord fingering patterns like you would with a guitar, and you don’t have to spend years to get a sound that doesn’t sound like a cat being tortured as you would with a violin. You can pick up a bass guitar and start playing bass lines almost immediately – the good news is that the easier it is to play an instrument along to music you like when you’re starting out, the more likely you’ll stay with the instrument for good.

Another great reason why the bass guitar is cool is that EVERYONE needs a bass player. You make the other band members sound good, and there are many styles of music out there that use the bass guitar. That means that if you’re a good bass player, you’re willing to work hard, learn and you have a great attitude –you’re going to have many more job opportunities than many other musicians would have.

Being a bassist is as much a state of mind as it is a position in the band. You need to put the song and the other musicians before yourself. You are the glue between the rhythm and the melody – you straddle the line between the drummer and the guitarist, giving the music that third dimension that makes music so exciting. If you’re willing to put your ego on the back burner, you can become a truly great bassist that is in demand.

Is playing the bass guitar easier? Yes it is. But to master any instrument is virtually impossible. Playing bass guitar is initially much easier than guitar; you can outline chords one finger at a time as opposed to learning the fingerings for each chord. You also have fewer strings to change than the guitarist, but keep in mind that bass guitar strings are thicker – so in some ways, playing the bass guitar is more difficult because you need to play just as fast as the guitarists but with thicker strings. This means that you’re moving more mass in the same amount of time or energy.

The electric bass guitar started out with 4 strings and remained that way for several decades, before evolving to 5, 6, 8 and even 12 stringed versions beginning in the mid-70s. These multi-stringed basses owe a large debt of thanks to Anthony Jackson who helped open the door to more than 4 string basses by commissioning the first six string bass guitar to be built in the 1970s!

The next time you feel you need more pump on a solo or raging verse, just stomp on your overdrive and blow the roof off the auditorium.

6. Mess around on stage with a loop pedal. If you're a guitarist that likes to repeat sections often and then add new riffs over-top, then a loop pedal will be perfect for you. Imagine playing your electric guitar once and then having that section to play along with while it repeats over and over again. It's your own personal back-up guitarist!

Sorry, Im kinda confused about everything, Im new to the whole 'guitar' thing so yeah, lols
Ive realized that there are many different kinds of cables and Im not sure which would be good. Your help would be appreciated. =)

DON'T BUY THAT CABLE!

Sorry to directly contradict the other posters, but they are completely wrong.

The link that you supplied is for a speaker cable. It's designed to go between and amplifier and speaker cable. It's made to carry a lot of current with little loss, but it will not work for hooking up a guitar to an amp.

The reason is that it is not shielded. The signal from your guitar is a very weak one, and the cable that carries it to your amp must have a shield to keep interference out. If you use a speaker cable between your guitar and amp, it won't break anything but it will have so much hum and noise that it will be useless (especially if you play with a lot of distortion).

What you want is an instrument cable.

Monster Cables are good, and they have a lifetime warranty, but the other guitarist in my band has had 2 of them fail during a show. Sure, he got them replaced, but it still stopped him in front of an audience. Monster Cables are just more hype than heft in my book...you won't find one in my rig anywhere.

One final bit of info...you really don't want to use a guitar cable between an amp and a speaker. Unlike a speaker cable, they're not designed to carry a lot of power. An amp with enough wattage can burn a guitar cable out.

The market for independent sound cards has seen a decline over the years. This can be blamed on chipset manufacturers equipping motherboards with HD sound cards that provide acceptable performance.

The Vista driver debacle that plagued Creative's X-Fi range did little to strengthen the public's opinion of costly sound cards. In the old days it was deemed a worthwhile upgrade to a system, because it offered a game port and took some load off the CPU. These days the CPU can easily handle the sound requirements for a game and with USB there is no need for game ports any more. So why does a system need a dedicated sound card? Truthfully it doesn't. You however do.

The Asus Xonar Essence STX is not aimed at gamers but rather at an all-round audio experience. In other words it should perform equally well with games, movies and music. The first thing that will surprise most people is the lack of 3.5mm jacks (these are the small headphone jacks). Instead, Asus have opted to use the larger 6.3mm jacks as well as 2 RCA outputs (left and right). The card comes bundled with a 6.3mm-to-3.5mm adaptor and a RCA-to-3.5mm Y cable so you can use your headphones on either. These ports make complete sense for audiophiles, especially those who work with sound equipment, like DJs. Fewer converters means less loss of sound quality. The line-in/mic-in is also a 6.3mm jack, so recording from sound equipment will be a breeze.

Two features about the Essence STX most impressed. Firstly, the built-in headphone amp gives more than enough volume to any pair of cans that you have. Secondly, and by far the most exciting of all the features of the card, you can upgrade the opamp. An opamp (operational amplifier) handles different and varying inputs into a single output. Different opamps can have varying effects on sound quality. Some provide a richer bass experience while others enhance the high end of the EQ. This is a curious thing for Asus to do, but a welcome one none the less.

The asking price is a bit steep for an object of desire rather than need, but the quality makes it worth the price. Music simply explodes with life. A good set of headphones makes music sound spectacular but a sound card of this quality upgrades it to the classification of phenomenal. Music has more depth than ever before - and this is across the board, from old classics like Eric Clapton with his guitar to Kings of Leon - Sex on Fire. Watching Saving Private Ryan on Blu-Ray almost became a religious experience with the landing at Omaha beach gaining a new level of realism.

This we can confidently attribute to the Essence STX. While the Essence STX is not aimed at gaming it doesn't disappoint when put through its paces. The sounds of bullets ricocheting off walls and rockets whizzing by is enough to make even the bravest of men cower under their desk.

It might be pricey but if you want your music, movies and games to reach a whole new level of awesomeness, your standard onboard is not going to deliver. The Asus Xonar Essence STX makes a significant difference to the overall experience of using your computer.
