How different is the Squier Strat and the American Fender Strat?

I've read that the American Fender is made of better materials, but in terms of playing it, is there a noticeable difference?

For example, if an excellent guitarist made a recording with a Squier instead of an American Fender, would you hear the difference?

And is the "Starcaster by Fender" (not the original semi-hollow body, but the kind you can get in Target) along the same lines of a Squier Strat?

Are the Squier Strat and "Starcaster by Fender" only played by beginners... like if you went into a club and the guy who was about to play was holding a "Starcaster" would you assume he wasn't going to play so well?

Hold on a second, everyone- I won't deny that 'real' Strats or Les Pauls are better guitars, but there is a place for the Squire and Epiphone, even in professional circles. To say that they are not suitable 'even for jamming' is just ridiculous. Are you saying that if Satriani or Malmsteen or Page picked up a Squire or an Epiphone, that they could not make it sound good? It's simply a TOOL, only as good as its user. There are some players that seek out certain Squires based on their place of production. The answerer above points out wood quality, and this is definitely an issue, but then for 1/4 the price, you can change for some great pickups and hardware and have an excellent guitar.

The Squier 'Classic Vibe' telecaster was a Guitar Player Magazine's "Editor's Pick".

Of course, I'd buy a better guitar second-hand, but that's me. There are tons of guys out there who realize they can't play and sell their gear for cheap. Look around. I got a top-of-the line Jackson Soloist for $450.00 and my '68 Les Paul Gold Top (yes, a real 1968, it's NOT a reissue, PAF pickups as well) for $400.00 in a classified ad.
