There are a few stages of guitar learning that everyone goes through and each one of these relate to different levels of skill. Certain things you will learn quickly and others will take longer. For example, if your final destination is the ability to strum sing-a-long songs on the beach or around the fire you'll reach your goal faster than the guy who wants to play speedy metal solo's.

Here's a breakdown of the stages of guitar learning and the approximate time it might take you to get there.

Playing Basic Chords - This is usually the first benchmark most new players reach: The ability to strum and switch between the basic guitar chords. At this point you don't necessarily have the chords memorized and aren't able to play many songs, but you're managing to fret and strum them. This level can be reached within one week.

Playing easy songs - You've mastered more guitar chords and have been practicing them enough that you've got most of them memorized and are able to strum and switch between them without too much hassle, and without looking at the fretboard when you do. This means you can play songs! This level can be reached in two to three weeks of daily practice, though for many it might be longer.

Playing Barre and Power Chords - We're moving right along and you're advancing to a level where most self-taught guitarists never go. Barre Chords are much more difficult than open chords and learning these takes extra practice and a whole new set of strength in your fretting hand. It's possible to play most barre chords in two months, quicker for some who practice a lot.

Fingerpicking - The ability to pluck individual strings and play simple riffs (short solo pieces on individual strings) is a new skill your strumming hand needs to learn. This can usually be achieved in two to three months if you start to learn and play easy guitar tabs.

Lead Guitar - A Lead guitarist is the person who's got the audience at his beckoning. Playing solo's and using techniques like slurring, sliding and vibratois a whole new set of rules and I'd give it three to four months. This might be way off depending on what kind of music we're talking about - playing acoustic solo's might take less time, but metal solo's will take significantly longer.

The improviser - A guitarist that can improvise riffs and solos in the middle of a live song, has moved from the realm of amateurship to being a semi-pro. Depending on how much talent you have and what your musical background is, this might take anything from six months to a year.

Please note that these time lengths are given as a very broad estimate and aimed at people with little musical experience. If it takes you longer than a week to learn the basic chords, don't get upset. These times are not set in stone and you have to learn and develop at a pace that's natural and comfortable for you!

If youre writing your own song, really, anything goes. There are certain chord progressions that naturally go together. In any piece of guitar music, there is a chord progression. It is the chords you play and in the order you play them. You may have a song though that is just a melody, which would just be one note at a time. You can put these together, a melody on top of a chord progression. And you'll need to choose a time signature, like 4/4, which will help determine your picking rhythm. Look at some existing music and see how it is laid out. Good luck!

How do you stretch arm and fingers to make playing guitar chords easier?

Im finding really hard to play chords on the the top frets because of the pain from stretching my fingers and arm how can i get over this quicker?

when in pain during the playing of a stringed instrument (guitar, bass) you should stop immediately and look at yourself critically.your fret hand thumb should rest easily on the back of the neck, somewhere in between your middle and Ring finger. also, you thumb should not press down. your fretting fingers should be Parallel to the frets themself.
i recommend you practise about 10-40 minutes at the time, a few times a day. when it hurts, stop immediately and rest your fingers. in time, you will get used to the thumb position and having your fingers parralell to the frets, and you will get used to playing guitar over time.

If you are a parent you can find many different educational and activity games for your children. Even Guitar Hero can be considered education due to the child learning music appreciation.

When playing these games, you can play with friends and family. But did you know you can play other people all over the world? With Xbox's wonderful internet connectivity you can connect with other players all over the world. You could be in the United States playing with someone from the United Kingdom. The possibilities are endless. You could even chat with these new friends. This also helps build up social character which is great for children and adults alike.

Xbox 360 games are relatively expensive for most people. Some people go throughout the year purchasing the game over and over again. This is due to the game getting scratched or damaged in some other way. This leads to the owner of the game replacing it and having to shell out the same amount of money. So even if you had to replace a game just once, you could be out one hundred dollars and more if you include time and gas.

This situation can be easily remedied. Making a back up copy of all your games can be a money and time saver. You can download your game and simply make a copy on the hard drive or make a disc copy. If you want, you can do both. This will save you a lot of money in the long run. Over time a game can just wear out and won't it be nice to have a copy already there and not have to purchase a new one? What if by some accident your Xbox 360 failed or was damaged in some way? Yes you may have to replace your Xbox 360 but at least you would still have all your great games if you made copies of them.

looking for a xams present for my Dad
He likes hid guitar and can play chords, he books and dvds but they are hard, they say easy but its noly easy if you know how to paly like a pro.

Guitarpic.... gave good advice. Go to your local music store or even Walmart. Some carry this stuff.
I suggest Paul Baloche songbook which has about 20 + songs with the chords etc... Here is a link where you can get it fast.
