Learn to Play Blues Guitar Level 1

Beginning blues guitar instruction is a great way to really hone your skills as a guitarist. One obvious reason is that the blues is a wonderfully passionate style of music that has been shared by many different musicians, but another great thing about working on this style is the fact that it can teach any guitar player so much about the construction and melodic changes of a song and solo.

Beginning blues guitar lessons is also a great way to really start understanding and
making sense of scales, starting with the major and minor pentatonic scales of course.
Its one of the best and easiest forms of music to train yourself to solo with, but there
is one problem. Because the blues is so enjoyable to play, a lot of guitarists find themselves getting stuck with in the genre. This isn't to blame blues music, as this can happen with any genre that you pursue. However, if you find yourself in this position, this may be your first time experiencing something that is difficult for more experienced guitarists to get past.

You will learn much from this style, including phrasing, but perhaps you will soon find
your musical ideas getting stale. What you do is try to incoporate what you are learning about a style such as the blues, and apply it to another type of music. Going from blues to Latin is definitely one of the best moves, because the dorian mode, which is commonly used in Latin music and the pentatonic scales go so well with each other. If you don't know what I'm talking about then perhaps you've heard of Santana? what a great sound! Imagine getting into something kind of borderline.

From here you could keep expanding and learn so much about music, but the point is that you have to take it one step at a time. Figure out what makes one little difference
between two styles of music. Then decide what IS common between them. Its very possible to cross styles, get out of a rut, discover so much about how music works, and further develop your own sound and style. Beginning blues guitar lessons is a great way to accelerate your playing, but remember that unless you want to play the blues your
whole life, that you'll need to nudge yourself in order to get going with something new.

There is no problem to learn and master guitar, but you really need to have an understanding of several styles of music. By taking this on upon yourself, you will truly learn and master guitar and be able to think outside of the box.

Due to the popularity of the guitar, there are a huge number of guitar courses available to all and in all shapes and sizes.   This is great news if you are learning how to play the guitar as you will be spoilt for choice when it comes to choosing.   As always, there is a downside.

It is no lie there are loads of great courses out there, the thing is, there are also a lot of bad ones too.  If you are going to part with your hard-earned money, do your research and make sure you are getting what you paid for.  Here are 7 tips to show you what you need to consider when looking for the best guitar lessons.

1.    Format.  There are different ways you can access the courses.  Some books come with a CD or DVD.  Others come with a multimedia disc which can be used with a PC.  Some courses also need to be connected to the Internet.  You need to think about your situation with regards to this and also think about how you like to learn.

2.    Level.  You need to make sure you are buying a course which is suitable for your level.  It is important to challenge yourself but trying something too difficult for your level will only deliver a blow to your confidence.

3.    Content.  Think about your reasons for wanting to learn guitar. Do you have a passion for blues and want to learn blues guitar?  Well you can.  There are courses available which focus on the guitar techniques for a particular genre of music for example, rock guitar lessons.  Other courses teach only whole songs.  The choice is available so pick a course which matches your reasons for wanting to learn how to play a guitar.

4.    Quality of Content.  As mentioned, make sure you pick a guitar course which is run by professionals and has a good reputation.  You can look on the Internet for reviews or ask in your local guitar/music shop for advice on which are the best.  Doing this will ensure the course you buy is not only made by experienced teachers and guitarists but is also well run and logically constructed.

5.    User friendly.  Following on from the last point, the course you buy must be user friendly and easy enough to use.  If it is over complicated and you can't learn from it, you will have lost some money and not learnt the guitar.

6.    Illustrations.  If you can, look through the instructional book.  The best ones are clear concise and easy to understand.  They should also have helpful images which can show you step-by-step what you need to learn.

7.    Cost.  So, you need to look for a course with all the above things which is in line with your budget.  As there are so many available, you are sure to find one which can help you learn how to play a guitar and doesn't leave a hole in your pocket.

Playing lead guitar seems like the next logical step to getting some skills in rhythm playing. You might need to focus more on the quality of your playing when you switch to single note solos and lead guitar licks. To start playing lead guitar you will need to be familiar with the notes on the guitar fretboard. This might seem like a big job but it only takes a few minutes a day of finding the notes and playing them in all positions.

You will need to add sessions of alternate picking using scales to your daily guitar practice. Your picking technique is the basis of your lead guitar playing but there are other techniques like string bending and skipping as well as hammer-ons, pull-offs and string tapping.

If you are a rock or blues guitarist you will need to know the minor pentatonic and the blues scale. The blues scale is only the minor pentatonic scale with an added flattened fifth. You can also add a flattened third or seventh.

If you can make or download a twelve bar blues backing track to play in front of, just play the notes of the scale in any order, experimenting with your blue notes. You will gradually get the feel of playing solos as you start to break free from the scale structure and use licks to make your guitar speak.

Another way of practicing playing lead guitar is to focus on the notes you find in the chords. Start by making sure you have the notes firmly in your head, and play them in any order with your backing track playing.

You could devote some time each day to discovering playing lead guitar using arpeggios. This simply involves fingering chord shapes and playing them as single notes. You simply hold the chord shape and play the strings up from the sixth and down from the first, then in random order.

If you have not already learnt to read guitar tabs, you should start now. It only takes half an hour to get the basic idea, and learning tab will allow you to tap into all the lead guitar solos that other guitarists have written in tab and shared on the internet. You can find tabs on tablature archive sites, and you could also check out forums to see if the members post tabs of their work. And don't forget that guitar magazines are still alive and well, so take a look at any regular tab features they might be running.

Blues Guitar

What are easy to play blues songs for guitar.?

I play guitar and im a beginner and I want to try some blues. What are some songs that sound really nice but don't have chords just single notes that are easy and sound nice.?

Any old blues song is cool whether it be hendrix or cream, or something even earlier. Just pick a song and listen to it over and over again, find out what key its in, and just fool around with notes that sound good in the pentatonic block. Take "Sunshine of your Love" by Cream, it is a simple riff of of a blues scale in D. Like anything it just takes practice and eventually everything seems easy. This is how I learned.

There is really nothing more exciting than starting an instrument. At the beginning however it is absolutely crucial that you establish a fundamental understanding of the musical system. the system of couse starts with notes, that lead into chords, that again lead into keys and so is the musical hierarchy.

When you start to play the guitar it is important that you study chords initially. Not from the standpoint that you will study them per se, but physically acclimate yourself to the instrument in general. This way you can at least have some fun with it. After all, if you can only play one note songs for guitar, things can get dull quickly.

Some of the best songs are really just the easiest ones. They normally contain 3 chords which are generally the 1st, 4th, and 5th degrees of the scale to which you would attribute certain places in the song to. The blues is probably the easiest to understand because its format is based on these three chords all day long!

So you may be asking what is a degree? How many notes does it take to construct a Major Chord? Minor? Seven Chords? The answer is very simple, and as you gain some valuable insights into this territory you will find more often than not something will pop in your understanding. Namely your ability to se music as a whole system instead of piece-mealed parts and bits and pieces. There is an inherent pattern written on the wall of music.
To find out what that pattern is click here.

Before you begin with the rock guitar lessons, you need to understand that this will not make you a lead guitar star overnight. Rock guitar lessons will only teach you the basics and advanced techniques. You still need to understand and practice enough to be able to master the art of performing rock guitar. The first phase in rock guitar courses will start with theory which will help you to understand the basic parts of the rock/electric guitar, standard notations, guitar symbols, and basic chord theory. You will also learn to play different scales and chords. You will discover to utilize your views and sentiments to perform the guitar so that in the later stages when you are ready to play, you and your guitar will become one!

The next phase of rock guitar lessons will focus on soloing. You may have been overcome by those amazing guitar solos that you have watched at live concerts or on Channel V or VH1. So here's your chance to learn soloing, which will include beginner, intermediate, and advanced lessons. In the beginner lessons you will understand more about hammer-ons, bends, open position scales, and vibratos. The intermediate lesson is where you will discover to do your own solo and perform it as well. You will also get to learn how to use natural harmonics and play major scale modes. When you reach the advanced soloing lessons, you will be confident enough to produce your solos and this will persuade you to play them more often. The advanced rock guitar courses will help you to perform different techniques especially with speed.

Speed is an important part of performing the rock guitar as well as soloing and you will really have to rehearse a lot to be able to move your hand freely across the guitar chords at high speed. Once you have mastered the scales, the chords and how to fly your hand over the guitar, you are ready to rock!

Rock guitar is not easy to understand but then it is not impossible because we will handhold you through each and every step of our rock guitar lessons. We see a potential rock guitar player in each of our students and learn the need to bring that rock star to the front and our rock guitar lessons have been developed to bring out your true talent.

Rock Guitar Lessons – Playing Rock!

Rock is one of the most well-liked genres of music that came into existence in the early 1960's and the one tool that represents rock perfectly is the guitar. Rock music is a genre that has evolved from several genres like rock and roll of the 1940's and 50's to country, blues, jazz, and even classical guitar. The acoustic guitar has been there for long but the backbone of Rock is actually the electric guitar that has become the ideal device for playing out torment and disappointment that is associated with rock music.

Some of the greatest rock bands of rock music include Pink Floyd, The Who, Led Zeppelin, The Animals, The Rolling Stones, Jefferson Airplane, The Doors, Jethro Tull, and of course the legend called Bob Dylan. Have you been wondering how to play like David Gilmour, John Petrucci, Slash, Van Halen, Steve Morse, Ritchie Blackmore, Jimmy Page, Keith Richards, Ritchie Sambora and many others? If you really, really want into performing rock then the first step is taking rock guitar lessons.

Basic Blues Guitar

Learning guitar grades?

Hi,
I've played the guitar since the age of six I'm a capable acoustic and electrical guitarist. Between the ages of 13 and 18 I became so engrossed in learning all my favourite songs I really developed my skills and even taught guitar to children and young adults for a few months in New York (rock, blues, jazz, fast metal). However, I'm only good practically. I'm now 21 and I've lately found that my guitar skills are not as refined as they once were and since I never truly sat and learned any theory (I only know the names of basic chords) 've begun to consider learning the guitar from grades 1 and upwards. I just don't know where to start. How many grades are there? How long does each grade take to complete? Can I do it from home as I work full-time? What exactly does the "grade-taking" involve and what are the benefits of completing the grades (i.e. Will they certify me as a professional guitarist?)? I really want to become much faster in soloing - blues/metal.

Thank you...

I have never heard of the grade system, although I learned to play long ago. I can give you one small piece of advice that might help since you mention you've only learned basic chords. In Nashville we used a basic theory called the Numbers System.

What it does is let you play any song in any key, as long as you have the numbers worked out for chord changes. This is really simple: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 & then 8 (or the octave, which is the same note as the 1 an "octave higher) The numbers are the same as Do, Re, Me, Fa, So, La, Ti, Do, just like the song in the movie, "The Sound of Music". Remember, "Do (or doe) a deer, a female deer, Re, a drop of falling sun, me a name I call myself, fa, a long long way to run..." Goofy I know, but almost everyone who plays has heard this song

So if your root (or 1) is "C", the numbers translate to; C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C. Easy right? Now try the key of "G"; G,A,B, C, D, E, F#, G.

So a 1, 4, 5 pattern would be C, F & G in the key of "C". Or G, C & D in the key of "G". It works for any chord. If your song is C, Aminor, D minor, G, it would be, 1, 6-, 2-, 5. In the key of "G" the same pattern would be G, Eminor, A minor, D.

Notice how minor is written as a minus sign ( - ). Kind of makes it easy doesn't it? People write charts in hundreds of different styles using "#" for sharp of course or "b" for flat, "o" for a diminished chord, ">" for augmented etc.

Also basic chords are made up of this; the 1, 3 & 5 notes make a chord. Example, "C" chord's 1, 3, 5 is C,E & G. Try it. If you want a minor chord, flat the 3 note (down one fret). For a major 7th, play the 1,3,5 and add the 7 note. (For a 7th chord, flat the 7.)

Another thing you might be already familiar with is the "CAGED" theory. Every chord can be played in 5 different positions; C, A, G, E & D position. You've probably already used this & it's really nothing more than thinking of your index finger as a capo.

This may be stuff you already know but if not, GOOD! It's kept me busy for the last 40 years or so.

One last thing; the only thing that will make you a professional musician is that you do it as a profession. That is, you make your living at it. I'm guessing you're semi-pro now. That's where everyone starts and since nothing is a better teacher than experience, you're on your way!

Good luck with it & remember, when you get stuck in a place, keep going - it usually means you're about to advance to the next level. Hope this makes some sense. There are books on the Number System you may want to check out if not.

The hidden guitar secrets on the fretboard.

That sounds all secretive and mythical, but it's actually quite simple. Whether you're learning to play rock guitar or not, there are some very simple chord shapes that can have you playing any major chord with only one finger.

I'm going to assume here that you know nothing about the guitar, so if you do know a little, please be patient while I explain things you may already know.

First, let's get some guitar basics down.

The guitar strings: What are they called and how are they numbered?

  • The thinnest guitar string is called the 1st string and it's tuned to the note E.
  • The 2nd string is tuned to B
  • 3rd string is G
  • 4th string is D
  • 5th string is A
  • And the 6th string is tuned to E as well, only a lot lower down.

To tune the guitar, I would advise getting a digital guitar tuner for now. Chances are that, as a beginner, your ears will not be that developed yet to accurately tune the guitar.

Easy guitar chords.

Now, here's what I want to show you. The 2nd, 3rd, and 4th string, without you putting a finger on the fretboard, are the three notes that make up a G major chord. What that means for you is that if you wanted to play, say now, an A chord, then all you'd have to do is put your index finger flat behind the 2nd fret.

As long as you're only strumming the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th string, they're all major chords. Let me give you the chords at each fret interval so you can play any major chord by just going up and down the fretboard.

The open three, as we've already said, is G, then at the 2nd fret is A, at the 4th fret is B, the 5th is C, the 7th D, 9th E, 10th F, and 12th fret is G again.

You'll notice I've left out some fret positions, that's because inbetween the chords I've mentioned, are the sharps and flats. The G sharp for instance, is the chord one fret up from the open G, ie the first fret. If you had played the A chord first, and then moved one fret down, it would be called A flat. Same note, just different perspective I suppose.

All you really need to know about the chords here, is that E and F are 1 fret apart, and B and C are 1 fret apart.

So there is no B sharp or E sharp, or C flat or F flat for that matter.

Okay, let's make this easy. What chords go well together?

Let's say you're playing in G major, in other words G major would be the key of the song and the root chord. There are only three major chords in any key, and in this case you've already got the one, G obviously.

The other two major chords will always be 5 frets up, and 7 frets up. So in the key of G, the two other chords are C and D. It doesn't matter where you start, it's always the same distance between the chords.

How to use this method to play rock guitar chords.

Rock guitar is mostly played with chords known as Power chords. The great thing about power chords is that they're made up of only two notes, and those two notes exclude the one note in a chord that makes it sound either major or minor.

Power chords sound best through a distorted or overdriven guitar amp, or through a distortion pedal or overdrive pedal.

Here's how to play them using the one finger system. If you take the chords I've just shown you, and instead of playing all three strings, you only play the 3rd and 4th string, then that's a power chord.

You can also play these on the 4th and 5th string, and if you want to get really heavy, the 5th and 6th string.

The problem with all these easy chords.

The only thing wrong with any of these chords, from a purely technical point of view, is that the lowest sounding note is not the note the chord is named after, which makes them sound a little light, or ungrounded. I'm having a bit of a hard time explaining that one fully, but when it comes to rock guitar power chords, there is another way to get a fuller sounding power chord.

By tuning the 6th string down to D, it's possible to play very full sounding rock guitar chords with one finger on the 4th, 5th, and 6th string.

Seeing as I'm writing this article mostly for the beginner electric guitar player who wants to start playing almost immediately, I should also advise that you also get the correct training, without all the short cuts, so you wont be limited.

You've got three more fingers, so just imagine what you could do with them once you get going.
