What are the notes for chromatic scale for guitar?
I can play the four frets on the guitar. I just have trouble with the note names.
In a normal scale, you have a total of 7 notes not including the octave. In a chromatic scale, you have all 12 notes not including the octave. That is, in a normal scale, you skip selective notes, in a chromatic you play all of them.
The notes in a chromatic scale depend on where you start. If you start at "C" for example, the scale is C C# D D# E F F# G G# A A# B C. Note that there is no "E#" (this is technically F) and no "B#" (technically C). You can start at any of these notes and use the sharps. You can switch these out if you really want to.
Should you start from another note, for example Ab (which is the same as G#), you'll need to use flats. The Ab chromatic scale is Ab A Bb Cb C Db D Eb Fb F Gb G Ab. You can replace Cb with B and Fb with E if you wish. There is debate among music theorist on which version you should use and why, so be aware.
As for the actual scale you are using, if you know your root (first) note, you know which scale you are using. Use your string names (EADGBe) and count up to the starting fret.
Also, one huge note: the chromatic scale is not used often in music. The only value it holds for you is learning the note positions on the fretboard (there are better ways to do this by the way) and for use as a finger exercise.
