Country music has been with us longer than most popular music genres. Country guitar players have evolved from guys in white cowboy suits strumming and singing about life on the trail to serious guitar virtuosos.

Lots of guitar players find themselves attracted to country music even though it may not be their original favorite style. A lot of guitarists find that country is a completely different way of playing guitar which gives their overall musicianship a big boost. So is country music difficult to learn after you have been playing rock for a while? Are there special chords or scales a country guitar player should know? And which country guitarists should I be listening to? Well, let's take a look.

First, let's deal with which country guitar players are regarded as the ones to listen to. There are many country artists who are not technical virtuosos, so if you have been watching Brad Paisley and Brent Mason, take comfort in the fact that you do not need to play up a storm. If you are wondering which scales you need to know, major pentatonics are a great start but one thing that's not set in stone in country music is which scales to use. You can use major AND minor pentatonics, and be prepared to be very flexible. You can play a different scale over every chord change. Whatever sounds good is the way to go.

As for  country guitar techniques, chicken pickin is a good one to put on the top of your list. Hammer-ons and pull-offs are standard techniques in country music. You also need to get your string bending up to speed to get that pedal-steel sound. Probably you would be well advised to work on your sound before getting too deeply into country guitar technique. Your picking is near the bridge and you will need to be able to use your string muting to good effect.

If you are a guitarist with some experience and chops already, you could try just playing along with some country CDs. Just play along and try to get into the country groove. Although tab was used for all music in past ages it has become popular as guitar notation because people who were attracted to playing the guitar were very often not attracted to spending time learning music theory and how to read sheet music.

Quite often, a newbie guitarist's inspiration to learn to play the guitar is the lead guitar player in a famous band. Hearing a great solo guitar player at work raises so many questions about the techniques he uses, the tone and volume settings, and where he gets those great guitar solos from.

In this age of instant gratification, you can find the tab for a guitar solo almost as soon as the song is released. To take advantage of the tabs on the internet you need to be aware that the guitar tab can tell you one thing: the notes that the guitarist is playing in the solo.

If you play the tab through you may not agree with the notes that are on the tab, so this is the time to make any changes that you feel are necessary. Once you feel that the guitar solo tab corresponds to your hearing of the solo on the CD version of the song, you need to check the fingering that is given.

If the guitar tab has been written manually using Notepad or a similar text editor, the fingering given will have been worked out by the guitarist who wrote the tab. If you are using a file from some guitar editing software like Powertab, you need to check the fingering thoroughly to make sure it is easy for you to play.

The reason you need to check the fingering is that tab editing programs have no idea what it feels like to have fingers, and if you follow the computer-generated fingering, you might be in for some unnecessary acrobatics. So remember to keep it simple.

So, there is no harm in being flexible in interpreting the tab for any guitar solo. If you feel that what's on the tab does not sound quite right, go with what you have. Once you're familiar with the music, the correct notes or chord will probably come to you. Also, do not be afraid to take liberties with any guitar solo you are learning. When you are up there playing the music on your guitar, it will be YOUR solo, so you can change it to make it your own if you like.

Here's one of my favorite methods for quickly blocking out entire sections of music and creating a complete piano composition.

First you need to draw out 8-bars on a piece of paper. I use 8-bars first because it's a relatively small space to "fill up" quickly. You don't have to use notation paper. Any paper will do. In fact, I use a spiral bound notebook with blank pages. I just write out 8-bars and voila, I've jotted down what will become a section of music.

Now, here's the interesting part. Most composers start with the melody line first. Nothing wrong with this. But if you really want to zap out a section quickly, start with the chord changes. Why? Because you can block out bars of music faster. Here's what I mean.

Say you want to create something in the Key of F Major. Great. Now we know that we have at least 6 chords to work with. By using just 3 chords, we can block out our 8-bars. How? LookÂ… Say we have the F Major 7 chord for the first 4 bars, then comes B flat Major for 2-bars and C 7 for the last 2-bars. We have now created a chord progression and charted it out. You can do this in under a minute. I swear it! It's that easy. Now all you have to do is decide upon the kind of arrangement you'll create for these chords.

It might be arpeggios, block chords, open position chordsÂ… whatever. The point here is that by using chords, you can map out a harmonic territory. Now you can either create a melody using these chords, or keep it entirely textural. It's up to you! Try it.
