Country guitar lessons in these days of the world wide web are now popular all over the world. If you are wondering what the fuss is about I will just mention some aspects of country guitar playing that excite the interest of music fans and guitar enthusiasts alike. This article will focus on a couple of the more individualistic guitar styles in country music and also talk a little about the Telecaster - the country musician's guitar.

First let us look at a guitar style that has entered the country genre through blues and rock. The slide guitar, also known as the bottleneck guitar is a lyrical way of expressing feelings through guitar music. It was developed in the early twentieth century by the early blues players, and popularized by young white rock and blues players in the nineteen sixties. Now there are many country guitar players who see the musical possibilities in this style of playing. The key to this technique is sliding an object along the guitar strings to make a whining or wailing sound. This presents the guitar player with many opportunities to play notes that fall between the frets of the guitar as well as imitating the sound of a singing voice.

The term "bottleneck" refers to the practice of many slide guitar performers of producing the sliding sound by fitting the neck of a bottle to their first or second finger. Popular wisdom has it that other players used the blade of a knife. Modern slide guitar players usually go to a music shop and buy a slide. You can play slide guitar with the guitar held in the normal playing position or with the guitar in your lap. A player can use an ordinary steel string acoustic guitar tuned in the standard way or to an open chord, or a resonator guitar which has a distinctive metallic sound well suited to slide playing.

Another guitar style used by country guitar players is chicken pickin', developed to high art by Waylon Jennings. It is used in lead guitar solos and involves the guitar player pulling on the string with his right hand fingers and at the same time damping the string with his left hand. Most country guitar players use a plectrum or thumbpick to play bass notes in conjunction with chicken pickin' on the treble strings.

Chet Atkins is a country guitar player who was adept at the chicken pickin' technique but he was most well known for his adaptation of the Travis picking technique. Merle Travis developed an impressive solo playing technique using his thumb to pick bass notes and his index finger to play melody or filler notes. Chet Atkins was so impressed with Travis' solos that he assumed that Travis was using his second and ring fingers in addition to his index finger. This mistaken assumption led to a whole new generation of country guitar players inspired by the Chet Atkins style.

If you want to take country guitar lessons you should learn about the typical sound that is associated with country guitar music. While rock and roll has as many sounds as there are guitar players, country guitar has its own sound. This is due to most country players opting to stay with the clean, unadorned sound of the Fender Telecaster. The "Tele" had a sound that made aspiring guitar players sit up and take notice combined with a design that made it a dream to play. It is a solid body electric guitar with two pickups, and was the first electric guitar to be successfully produced and sold on a large scale.

In the early days of the electric guitar both rock and country guitar players wanted to be heard by the audience without feedback interfering with the sound of the guitar. The Telecaster filled the bill when it came out in 1950 and has remained a popular choice for solo guitarist ever since. Country guitarists noted for being enthusiastic Telecaster players include Buck Owens, Waylon Jennings, James Burton and Merle Haggard.

Amp Head

Can I use a Mesa guitar Head on a Marshall amp?

I am currently using a MG100HDFX Guitar Amp Head + Marshall MG412 cab. I was wondering If I could get the Mesa Dual rectifier Head and put it on My Marshall cab? I heard from my friend that the Mesa head is too loud for the Marshall half stack and would blow it out. I love the sound of the Mesa Dual rec, but I don want to spend alot of money on another cab... please help.

It's not a question of loudness... it's a question of amps/watts... which still shouldn't be an issue. Most quality heads/cabs are interchangeable. Actually a lot of professionals mix different heads/cabs. Marshall may not be the same as Mesa, but unless your cranking things to max... which shouldn't EVER be necessary, then you're good.

If you're playing a larger venue and need more volume than the half-stack can provide, then I suggest either you or the venue invest in a quality PA system and mic your cab. It's a good idea for saving wear-n-tear on your stack by avoiding turning things up too much... no matter what cab you've got, that head will eventually burn-up by being run at high levels.

Btw, Marshall and Mesa are my top 2 favs, so that's a killer half-stack you got there. Mesa heads are friggin' amazing.

which guitar should i get a paul reed smith or gibson les paul?

so ive got £550 from weekend work and christmas, i play guitar quite a bit but my guitar i had (broken now) was c.rap anyways was a yamaha heres the guitars is there any better ones i can get for under £550

Personally i would go for the les paul, but that might just be 'cause im a bit obsessed with them! But Blue has a point, a lot of people have a les paul so i guess you could stand out with a PRS. But i would still have to say the les paul

Input Jack

What is wrong with the input jack on my amp?

I have a fender amp and the input jack is messed up. The best I can explain is that when I plug the cord into the input jack on the amp, it doesn't "click" into place or I guess "lock" into place. It just sits in the input jack and when i move the cord any direction, it makes a very loud static noise. Help?

the other thing it might be is, there's this little metal tab inside that the groove on your input rests in. That is either bent back (best case scenario) or broken off. Amps are fairly easy to take apart and put back together. I bet if you unscrew the front panel, you will see the tab is bent back as they don't normally break off too easy. If that's the case, over bend it in and when you insert your input the next time it will hold tighter eliminating the loose connection and static. The other answer that mentions soldering wires also has a possibility of being right - this would also be noticable when you take it apart. And if it is the case you can save yourself a ton of money by going to Radio Shack, buying a soldering iron for 8.99 and fixing it yourself.

Bass Cabinet

Would a Bass Combo Amp with a Guitar Cabinet hooked to it sound good with an Electric Guitar?

I'm getting a new Fender for Christmas and was wondering if this would sound good. I already have a Kustom Bass Combo Amp. If I add an Electric Guitar Cabinet to it... how would it sound? Would it be able to get any of that great Fender sound into it or would it be too bassy? I know Jimi Hendrix and ZZ Top used bassmen for their electric guitars.

Personally I yhink it would be too "bassy" (if thats a word). I think that may just be my opinion, the only real way is to expirement. It also depends on what type of music you may want to play. If you like hardcore metal solos then don't bother with a bass amp. If you like loud chugging riffs that will make the foundation of your house shake then keep the bass amp ang get the guitar cabnet too.

The exact date when American pool, or billiards as it is sometimes known, first arrived in America is still somewhat of a mystery as no one really knows. It has been said through listening to different tales that the Spaniards brought the game to St Augustine in the 1580's, as there is no trace to confirm this it is more than likely that it was the English and Dutch settlers who first introduced the game.

It was in the late 1700's that a group of American cabinetmakers produced billiard tables of a high quality but only in small numbers, the game however became popular all through the colonies and it has been reported that all those centuries ago George Washington played a game and won the match in 1748.

It wasn't long when, later in 1830, using poor equipment, that rooms were used entirely for the game of billiards. The most famous room used by stockbrokers centuries ago was a room at Bass- fords in New York. This is probably where the love and popularity of the game in America began, there were several different versions of billiards that developed from Pin Pool. Pin Pool was played using small targets of wood, a miniature game of what is known of today as bowling. Another version is Fifteen Ball Pool.

It is a little time later that the popularity of the game was due to a man by the name of Michael Phelan, he was known as the father of American billiards. Michael Phelan, who was an Irish emigrant, later wrote a book in late 1850 about the game, it is thought that the book was the first one in America. Mr. Phelan was extremely influential and devised rules and set standards of behavior for the game. As an inventor, he also added diamonds to tables as aiming guides, and later, he was responsible for the designs of new tables and cushions.

Michael Phelan was the first American billiard columnist and it was in 1859 on January 1st, that his first weekly article was printed in Leslie's Illustrated Weekly winning a prize month's later of $15.00 at Detroit, in one of the most important stake matches in the United States. It was through his love of the game and endless energy that he later created a manufacturing company called Phelan & Collender. It was later in 1894 that the company merged with its competitor, J.M.Brunswick & Balke to become Brunswick-Balke-Collander, due to this merge all aspects of the game were controlled tightly until 1950's. Brunswick Billiards the successor is known all over America as one of the largest manufacturers.

Today when you see the sign "pool room" everybody knows this is where a game of pool is played, this wasn't the same back in the early 19th century the term poolroom was actually a betting parlor for horseracing. It was with the introduction of pool tables being installed so that the patrons could pass the time away in between horse races. It was because of the two activities being linked together in the public mind, but the term "pool room" actually came from betting which took place in the room not billiards.

As the years went on and after World War II it was thought the game may go into decline this was because soldiers returning from the war were interested in buying homes or building careers rather than spending days in a poolroom. It was in 1961 and later in 1986 that the game of billiards took a huge turnaround and was revived. The first was with the release of the black and white film "The Hustler" which sent America into frenzy with people wanting to play pool like the hustler, and later the sequel to the film, "The Color of Money", with Paul Newman and Tom Cruise. Today American pool tables can be seen in pubs and clubs throughout the USA and around the world.
