It has been said that the American detective story began sometime in the later nineteenth century. Many critics give credit to an author named Anna Katherine Green for starting this American version of what was already an interest in Europe. Shortly after the budding of what we call the beginning of American detective stories, the realization was that even the first American detective story was influenced in some way by Europe. Whether it was influenced by one of the earlier novels such as Collins, or even by one of Doyle's Sherlock Holmes tales, it is uncertain, but it was almost surely derived from Europe. The plots and themes all point to the European influence and rules.

It was later largely realized that the most significant difference between the American version and the English version is the language. The American crime story is much more harsh and blunt. The language that an American crime story entails is various and is much like the blend in our current society whereas the language in a classic English derived crime story is more upper class English and not as corrupt with obscenities or just plain old regular American dialogue. American crime stories blend perfectly the everyday speech that is commonly heard in this vast melting pot of different cultures and heritages

These pulp fiction stories were truly the first real stories that can be called American in almost every sense. The corruption of the social life in America and the prohibition that was ongoing in larger cities spurred a sort of revolution. This disgruntlement had to show its face somewhere and pulp fiction stories became the method of choice for many writers. The Black Mask was one such pulp magazine publication that actually lasted for quite some time before finally being killed off sometime in the nineteen fifties.

Pulp magazine stories gave way to the hard - boiled detective stories around the nineteen twenties. This type of story focused on the tough guy detective. They were stories of gangsters and the like. They were definitely no comparison to Sherlock Holmes, who despite his cleverness, was not perceived as being much of a tough guy.

Book publications of American detective fiction appeared in the late twenties and the early thirties made this action more popular among writers and publishers alike. Even though these stories that were made into books had most likely already appeared in pulp magazine publications somewhere along the line, the writer had to be one of the best available. It was not common to allow someone who was not one of the best in the field to be published, therefore, only the top pulp writers were offered such a special achievement. Others were simply not good enough, by publishing quality standards, to spend the time and money on.

Books opened the door to television and the detective program was born. This type of show offered a short story that was acted out on live television. Most of these were badly acted and had poor characters but they were able to evolve over the years into something much more desirable to watch. With some of the current crop being actually quite good.

Chris Haycock is an information publisher, and a real fanatic about early detective fiction. Having amassed a large collection of early detective/mystery novels. A particular favourite is Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. For more information, and details of an offer not to be missed why not go now to http://www.sherlockandwatson.com

If you are thinking of buying a bass in the near future here are 5 important tips:

1. Are you experienced? - Try out as many different types of basses as you can before going shopping. If you have friends in bands ask if you can try out their instruments for a bit. This will help to narrow down your search and save you a lot of time. If possible take your musician friend along with you when you make your purchasing trip and get their opinion before making a final decision.

2. Second-hand rose! - Depending on your budget you may be looking for a new or second hand instrument and a well known brand or not. For a used instrument or a not well known brand make sure you have some type of manufacturer or seller's guarantee so you can get a refund if there is a problem with the instrument. For well known brands there should be no problems but you pay more for this peace of mind.

3. Wring that neck - With inexpensive guitars the most common fault to develop is a warped neck due to the string tension. This is generally an incurable fault and makes the instrument useless. If you sight down the neck from the bridge end all the frets should be parallel to each other. If not the neck may be warped. Please note that neck warp should not be confused with normal bowing which is a gentle curve up at the bridge and neck (or down in the middle!). This is intentional for a guitar as it provides space for the strings to vibrate without buzzing on the frets.

While you are looking check the neck carefully for cracks or repairs which may indicate past problems.

4. How does it feel? - When you strap on the bass the first thing you will notice is the weight. What will it be like after practicing for an hour or a two hour gig? Next try fretting notes up and down the neck. Are you able to get a clear sound without buzzing? Fret buzz can indicate neck problems or it could just be a bad set up. The height of the strings over the frets is called "action" and is measured at the 12th fret. The action determines how easy it is to fret a note. Action is a trade-off between ease of play and sound quality - too low action leads to fret buzzing - to high and you get a better tone but it's harder to fret. Depending on who you are buying from and how much you are paying you can ask the seller to set the bass up for the lowest action without buzzing.

5. The word on the street. - You should be able to find reviews on the Internet or in music magazines for the bass you are thinking of getting. These are gold for the would be purchaser as the owners of the guitar have had them long enough to have discovered any defects.

Thanks for reading and good luck with your shopping.

Whiplash injuries and whiplash-associated disorders (WAD) are a range of injuries to the neck caused by or related to a sudden distortion of the neck. It is a very serious trauma because neck holds a lot of nerves and a part of the spinal cord. Usually the areas damaged by whiplash are neck, and the mid-back (middle of the spine). The symptoms can appear not only after this injury, but also often are not felt until days afterwards. In most of the cases a complete recovery fro whiplash can take up to three weeks, in some serious cases it will take a year or more and the most serious cases could result into chronic pain and injuries.

This type of trauma most commonly happens during motor vehicle accidents, if a vehicle is hit in the rear. One of the biggest problems is that the crash does not necessarily need to happen at high speed, if an impact was unexpected the whole accident can result into a whiplash injury.

It can also be sustained from falls from bicycles or horses, slips, falls, blows to the head from an assault, and injuries suffered through participation in sports activities, but the car accidents are the main cause. In many countries the whiplash injuries are the injuries covered by the car insurers. In Canada the research of this widespread issue has gained additional attention from public auto insures.

On April 15, 1995 Spine published a full report done by the Québec Task Force titled Redefining "Whiplash". The Québec Task Force was a task force sponsored by the Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec, the public auto insurer in Quebec, Canada. The published report contained recommendations on prevention, diagnosis and treatment of WAD, and later it became base for Guideline on the Management of Claims Involving Whiplash-Associated, the main guide to classifying WAD and guidelines on managing the disorder. The report was later updated in January 2001.

The Grades classified by the Quebec Task Force on Whiplash-associated disorders (WADs) are following:

Grade 0: no neck pain, stiffness, or any physical signs are noticed

Grade 1: complaints of neck pain, stiffness or tenderness only but no physical signs are noted by the examining physician.

Grade 2: neck complaints and the examining physician finds decreased range of motion and point tenderness in the neck.

Grade 3: decreased range of motion plus neurological signs such as decreased deep tendon reflexes, weakness, insomnia and sensory deficits.

Grade 4: neck complaints and fracture or dislocation, or injury to the spinal cord.

A funny thing is that the second cause of whiplash related injuries is headbanging, an important element of metal culture. Headbanging is process when metal fans and musicians band their heads and shake their hair, you could see it in most of the metal videos. And everyone in this culture is heading towards the most extreme and fast headbanging, so whiplash injuries are a common thing. Still in this case there is no one to sue for the injuries.

Chromatic Guitar

What are the notes for chromatic scale for guitar?

I can play the four frets on the guitar. I just have trouble with the note names.

In a normal scale, you have a total of 7 notes not including the octave. In a chromatic scale, you have all 12 notes not including the octave. That is, in a normal scale, you skip selective notes, in a chromatic you play all of them.

The notes in a chromatic scale depend on where you start. If you start at "C" for example, the scale is C C# D D# E F F# G G# A A# B C. Note that there is no "E#" (this is technically F) and no "B#" (technically C). You can start at any of these notes and use the sharps. You can switch these out if you really want to.

Should you start from another note, for example Ab (which is the same as G#), you'll need to use flats. The Ab chromatic scale is Ab A Bb Cb C Db D Eb Fb F Gb G Ab. You can replace Cb with B and Fb with E if you wish. There is debate among music theorist on which version you should use and why, so be aware.

As for the actual scale you are using, if you know your root (first) note, you know which scale you are using. Use your string names (EADGBe) and count up to the starting fret.

Also, one huge note: the chromatic scale is not used often in music. The only value it holds for you is learning the note positions on the fretboard (there are better ways to do this by the way) and for use as a finger exercise.

Black Gold

Need help with colors to go with black and gold bedding?

My walls are white, furniture black, natural pine floors and black bedspread with large gold floral print. What color drapes and accent colors should I use?

i would go with a tan/natural colored muslin, linen or burlap for the drapes.(yep, burlap...very cool rustic texture...and it would contrast with the slick black and gold scheme nicely.) if you want some pops of color, add more gold (if you like it) and a dark brick red. i would play up the natural/ slick contrast you have going with a combination of very modern and rustic accessories (frames, bowls, candlesticks) to add visual interest.
